Usually the hike around the cordillera Huayhuash starts at Cuartelhuain, south of Huaraz. This lesser-known route offers some of the most stunning scenery on foot anywhere; winding past dramatic peaks like Yerupaja 6,634m., Peru's second highest peak after Huascaran, Jirisanca, Siula Grande famously featured in 'Touching the Void', Rondoy, Ninashanca and Rasac. The path also takes you alongside breathtakingly lovely crystal clear mountain lakes and small hamlets that seem untouched by time - making this an excellent reward for anyone prepared enough to tackle these trails.
